About Us

High Street Front of Building

Our Club is conveniently located in the centre of the old coaching town of Hoddesdon in Hertfordshire. It was established in 1900 as a private members' Club to serve the social needs of responsible conservative-minded people. We are currently located in a Grade II listed building known in history to as "The Stanboroughs". This name no longer forms part of our postal address and the association is mostly long forgotten by local people.

Our Facilities

We have two regular bars for members and a Function Room with a dedicated bar for either Club Events or private Functions, and also a dedicated Snooker Room. One of the regular bars may be occasionally dedicated as a restaurant, depending on market needs, or for entertainment.

We also have a set of Club Rules to which all members automatically agree to when they join.

Our History

The original building dates back to around 1635 when it was known as ‘The Stanboroughs’ and is today a Grade II Listed Building. The section behind dates from the Victorian era, with the rear part extended as recently as 1984. The Club was formed in 1900 and has always been housed in this building. The following facts have been selectively extracted from The Hoddesdon and Broxbourne Unionist Club 1900 - 1950 Jubilee booklet.

“In 1900 a number of prominent Conservative townsmen established the Hoddesdon Unionist Club in order that they might meet in a social atmosphere. A meeting was called and minutes say that it was attended by a number of leading professional and business men of the town. ‘Stanboroughs’ owner Dr. J.E.B. Wells was approached to establish a lease so that the proposed Club could be housed there.

In, or after, 1939 the front of the Club premises was converted to 3 shops and this move by the Committee considerably helped the Club finances, as well as making the front of the premises more valuable and attractive.”

At some time the name changed from The Hoddesdon Unionist Club to The Hoddesdon and Broxbourne Unionist Club, and then The Hoddesdon and Broxbourne Conservative Club. The shops were converted back to form the front bar and the Function Room/Snooker Room extension was opened by John Gummer in 1984.

We're Moving (but not very far)

We have occupied our current premises since the Club was founded, but fashion and tastes change, and the economic, commercial and competitive environment in which the Club exists also changes. To ensure the Club’s perpetuity for both current and future generations we are implementing a Strategic Plan which moves the Club to a modern, purpose-built, Clubhouse at the rear of the present premises, which will improve our facilities and increase exposure and visibility in the town.
